Understanding Friendships

Irrespective of whether one is a boy or girl, young or old, rich or poor, healthy or sick, the commonality lies in the essential human need for companionship. From the moment we grasp the concept of social connections in our kindergarten days, we intricately incorporate friends into the very fabric of our lives. The authority in this regard is Robin Dunbar, an evolutionary psychologist famous for his best-seller FRIENDS: Understanding the Power of our Most Important Relationships.

These two articles explain the science behind friendships -

  • This is a summary of the interview with Dunbar in Atlantic (a quick read)

  • This one is a book summary of the above book (it is behind a paywall but can be circumvented by adding to pocket app)

You can listen to his interview on YouTube here on the same subject.
